Exceptional Sound for ANY PriceMar 11, 2009
I purchased my 640A from Millersound in Lansdale, PA. Bill LeGall is one of the most well respected repair techs for hi-fi speaker design and rebuild anywhere with many accolades. He only carries Cambridge products for the following reason: "If I needed to spend more, believe me, I'd spend what I needed to to showcase my work at its best, but this beats everything." B.L.
I'm no expert on hi-fi, however, I'm a musician, and I know excellent tone, articulate sound reproduction, fluidity, vast soundstage and frequency response in an amplifier when I hear it, and I haven't heard ANYTHING this fine since I sampled, for the novelty of it, an all tube system of two mono blocks and separate preamp at a hi-fi specialty store in Charleston, WV that costs more than $20,000! As a guitarist, I can solidly attest to the fact that tubes make a difference in guitar amplification, and until I heard the 640A, I held this opinion to be true of receivers as well....not any more! I love my old Harman Kardon all tube integrated Chorale A260 and will have it repaired eventually for use in the bedroom, but between the plug and play simplicity of the 640A (read: no fussing with tubes, vintage quirks and so forth) the superior overall sound, and the unbeatable price, I can honestly say you cannot go wrong with the 640A. I sampled this amp through Martin Logan Spire speakers, and was highly impressed. Though my Technics SB LX70's are a far, far cry from the Martin Logan pair, I'm amazed at how good even these sound now! Yes, the speakers are what you hear, but if your source is bad, what can even the best speakers give you? (though I will be upgrading the speakers soon too)
The one potential "issue" would be that it is advisable to pair this amp with speakers that lean toward the warm side.
This amp is beautifully crafted, very solid, having too, a sturdy remote that controls all of your other Cambridge products and iPod. There will be no mistake in purchasing this amp.
