For true vinyl fans, a high performance phono pre-amplifier is a must-have to get the best performance from your music. Thankfully, Cambridge Audio has the perfect solution in the shape of the 651P. Adding weight, scale and detail to all your favourite music, our flagship 651P, is a thoroughly reworked and revised replacement for the legendary 640P, which picked-up dozens of awards in its day. Many of today's (and yesterday's!) audio systems, from dedicated stereo amplifiers to all-in-one systems and receivers, lack the specialist, built-in amplification (known as a 'phono preamp' or 'phono stage') required for the direct connection of turntables. Cambridge Audio's 651P phono preamplifier, allows virtually all turntables on the market to flourish by using a sophisticated electronic circuit design that has been created to accommodate the two most commonly found types of phono cartridge used with modern turntables: Moving Magnet (MM) and Moving Coil (MC). Designed to bring out the hi-fi realism inherent to vinyl's grooves, the 651P is one of our most cost-effective, performance-enhancing creations. The 651P uses advanced amplification circuitry to provide the lowest possible distortion and noise. Compatible with the audiophile's cartridge choice, Moving Coil, the 651P model also employs high-spec multi-parallel capacitors to achieve exceptional RIAA accuracy. In a further nod towards its audiophile credentials the 651P features a subsonic filter to remove the unwanted and disruptive effects of low-frequency energy. And in line with Cambridge Audio's commitment to the environment, the new 651P is fitted with a power switch to allow consumption to be zeroed when not in use.

Multi-parallel capacitors to achieve exceptional RIAA accuracy of only 0.3dB up to 50kHz.

Phono pre-amplifier with moving magnet (MM) and moving coil (MC) input stages.

ECO-Friendly Improved Power Supply

Single ended "Class A" gain stages with discreet transistors

Defeatable subsonic filter to eliminate very low frequency 'rumble', caused by vinyl imperfections.

5Kicking myself for not buying soonerAug 25, 2012
By steve french "i'm a stoned cougar"
Upgraded from a cheapy pre-amp and very glad I did. Hum = gone, loud rumble when stylus first touches the disc = gone, clarity and detail = huge step up, depth = huge step up. I listen to a mix of new and previously-owned wax and both have more life with this stage.

It's not cheap (understood that everything's relative in hifi), but I'd say that anyone who's already invested in a good turntable should not let their pre-amp be the weak link. Don't wait as long as I did....

5Crystal clear audioFeb 14, 2014
By Roger D. Leahey
My setup consists of an Audio-Technica AT-LP120-USB turntable, and Yamaha stereo amp wired to my 1963 Magnavox AstroSonic console speakers (two 15" cone speakers and two exponential treble horns).

I bought the Cambridge because I wanted to upgrade from the built in preamp that is incorporated in my turntable. My records sound crystal clear with no extraneous noise of any kind. I was a bit worried when I saw the Cambridge had a ground terminal, but my turntable didn't, so I simply ignored it and there proved to be no consequence whatever.

I have decided to add the following to all my reviews:
Beware! Some "reviewers" will trash a product for no reason simply because they are paid to do so or because they sell competitive products. Other "reviewers" will give products - that they have never seen and never used - glowing 5 star ratings - for a fee. Some honest reviewers do not understand what a product is for or how to use it and will trash a product simply because they are just plain dumb. The biggest of companies have been fined for paying an army of "reviewers" to review their products.

5A must for any turntable owner!Mar 03, 2014

Great price, arrived quickly and completely took the buzz out of my turntable. Great product for the right price! Couldn't believe the audio improvement.

5It was what I expected.Aug 25, 2013

I own several Cambridge products and they have all exceeded my expectations. The phono amp is used with he project debut. It sounds excellent, rather its very quite, it doesn't get in the way of the music.
